Executive Committee Report_SeongJin Cho

How have you experienced your term as ExCo member?
First of all, it was an amazing opportunity to run a globalized organization as Executive Committee member for one year. Having online meetings, and attending live meetings, sometimes it was fun and sometimes it was hard-working time. Through many meetings, I’ve realized how communication skills, responsibilities and executing stamina are important. With several projects, including IVSA Journal and website rebuilding, it was more than just upgrading my computer skills. It was a meaningful moment recognizing how actually work progress goes through. With teamwork, completing projects one by one brought me and my colleague great amount of fulfillment. Spending a year on international organization helped me improve myself in a wide way. English communication, time management, and wider insight towards the world, these were progressively becoming one of my passive skills. To be specific, I’ve learned how to participate on international meeting, how to manage extra time for emerging task, and how to track many different events happening all over the world. Overall it was a great opportunity, however, sometimes relative shortage on English communication skills and leadership made it uneasy to drive certain projects. It leaves me some regret on specific moments when I was not having enough courage to actively drive some of actions. However this also would not have been recognized if I hadn’t spent the time being ExCo member.
You have been busy with a lot of diverse tasks and projects, can you explain a little bit more of what you did?
Reconstructed and redesigned IVSA official website, and this was not an easy job since the work included program coding, content re-uploading, and numerous trials on designing. It took entire week at the end of December. Unlike past website, which was managed by web-design company, the renewed website now is managed solely by IVSA. This means we can manipulate contents, designs and everything about website.
Created new IVSA business card, new logos for IVSA committees, new IVSA merchandise designs and new certificates for IVSA MO/president/EOs. This has been done with photoshop/illustrator skills.
Dealt with numerous technical problems, including website domain purchasing issue, countless email program errors, website crashing issues, and others. Many different kinds of errors occurred every month, thus keep researching and phone calling was necessary.
Published IVSA Journal twice. Publishing a journal implies various steps – conceiving the concept of certain edition, organizing and aggregating the contents from diverse people,  proofreading and publishing through social media.
Constantly have been active with social media. Not only uploading IVSA or IVSA partner’s news (attended events, scholarship, projects such as AMR, and Christmas/New year words.) on 3-5 different IVSA social media but also replying all the inquires coming from many different parts of the world (students, professors, organizations, and sometimes strange people who just say hi to me!).
Created IVSA Congress videos and IVSA cooking challenge video template. This has been done with adobe premierpro/aftereffect skills.
Certain projects like FECAVA scholarship, Wikivet Live, and IVSA Strategy committee were actively driven by aggressive promotion, receiving applications, and uploading updates through IVSA social media.
Some projects were begun by this term but it shall be continued with the next term. (IVSA Exchange platform project, IVSA online meeting tool management – google calendar, online meeting, slack, and trello)
Many other small tasks have been done, such as creating an updated version of IVSA mail activation instruction, re-mapping active IVSA MOs, and being alert to IVSA mails.
Did you accomplish for yourself and IVSA what you wanted to accomplish during your term?
Yes and no. One of the biggest accomplishments for this term is website reconstruction. First impression on the former IVSA website was that it needs to be fixed. It had been operating with outdated contents, unmanageable designs, and uncomfortable UX. The first thing needed to be done was to change the website that can be renewable with easy-access. It was not an easy work to completely rebuild the website, starting from learning how to do coding. Eventually it is not fully upgraded so it needs to be trimmed more with the next term PRC. It is certain that one cannot disagree to the fact that the website of certain organization is really important since it would be the first window for accessing people and it could be the platform where members and partners can communicate each other. One of the goals that I wanted to achieve was, build a complete platform where all the IVSA members can communicate with each other, no matter how far away from one another. Living in a highly developed world, we – as vet students – are already exposed to many other communities through Facebook, Instagram, and twitter. But it is certain that vet community isn’t large nor deep enough. I believe IVSA students as future vets, can have a huge impact on the world by getting connected in a much closer way. I hope it can be achieved in the near future.
What did you learn during the past months?
The most important thing for running an organization is a harmony of leadership and teamwork. Strong leadership that can make the team move towards one certain way is needed to motivate each team member to work. And balanced teamwork will support this leadership in an effective way. This term of IVSA ExCo had a great start with strong leadership and effective teamwork, but at the end it wasn’t good in some ways. Motivation is also important.
Would you like to tell us anything else? (i.e. most fun thing this year, the thing that surprised you most)
The most fun thing is always the party. Let’s party hard !
